Leadership and Followers.

My 9th level character just took the leadership feat, and has a leadership score of 10. So I get a 7th level cohort. Unfortunatley I get a -1 for moving around a lot from the attracting followers table, so I won't get followers until next level. But I was going to look at what I could get for followers before I got them.

The question I have though is I've heard people say that followers have to be from an NPC class and can't use any PC classes. But from what I've read in the PHB, DMG and the SRD I don't see that requirement listed anywhere.

SRD said:
The character can lead up to the indicated number of characters of each level. Followers are similar to cohorts, except they’re generally low-level NPCs. Because they’re generally five or more levels behind the character they follow, they’re rarely effective in combat.

So can I use PC classes? the only thing it says is they are generally low-level NPCs. Not that they are required to take the crappy classes.

The 3.0 rule was that followers had to be commoners, experts, or warriors. This rule was removed in 3.5. (For what it is worth, in my campaign, followers still have to be commoners, experts, or warriors, and ocassionally adepts; but this is a house rule, and clearly set out for the players in my house rules document).

I don't remember where is the text but I think that if you take followers with pc classes they are 3 levels lower than the table and 4 levels lower if they have a prestige class, it's written NPC classes.

I haven't seen that, and how would that work out? Even with the top leadership score of 25+, you only get up to level 6 followers. If you want a follower with a prestige class he'd have to be 2nd level according to the rule above . . .

Those "rules" were suggestions made in a Sage Advice, IIRC.
