For cohorts, this kind of thing seems to be allowed in the DMG under "special cohorts". My main question is for followers: I'm talking about ECL+0 outsiders that have no special abilities, no SR, no spell-like abilities and are about as powerful as an orc or other similar race; they advance by character class. So these outsider followers would all have a level in expert or warrior and be 1/2 CR. Is this unreasonable? It seems okay to me. The outsiders would remain so long as their mortal leader remained alive and faithful to their deity. They could serve to advise the character in how she could best serve their deity and avoid sin or other transgressions, as well as serve as a status symbol of the leader's close relationship with their deity.</blockquote>
