Ok then. One of many reasons I can think of why a group of PCs might want the Leadership feat is if they are threatened by a BBEG and his army. Granted the peons are peons and can be wiped out just the same as the PCs peons, it would make sense to even the odds a little bit by getting your own workforce/army in one foul swoop by everyone taking the feat. Poof! Defensive walls and towers start going up and when he BBEG discovers where they are he brings his troops and they do battle against the PC's followers. The PCs square off against the BBEG and don't have to worry about wading through a few hundred troops to get to him while the BBEG pegs them from afar. Instead they can use their own 'troops' to hold off the BBEG's grunts for a while and they can go after the BBEG unscathed, and even try to use a few traps the followers have constructed to chew him up a bit. They may not be all that tough in a fight, but that may not be where it counts at all. Oh, and I would do nothing like 'Firebrand' the followers, or disease the well, or have them all kill themselves in a goofy ritualistic suicide to help their masters through 'soul therapy', or anything else to kill them off. I will let the players do that for me. Soon enough they will be playing mayors of their new town and care for their little followers. Some squads of scouts disappear, a few are killed by raiding kobolds, and a family catches lycanthropcy. Oh yes, I can feel the ideas coming now...
