Leadership?

I own the DMG, but don't quite understand the feat.

1. Does your cohort level as you do? When you go up a level, you add 1, for the new level, to you leadership score to determine new level of cohort? OR does he just gain EXP?

2. The variant rules in Defenders of the Faith which allow for dragon mounts....are they only for paladins or could fighters who take leadership get a dragon mount?

3. I've seen someone mention taking leadership multiple times. WHY? does this double the number of followers and cohorts?

and for 3., yes, probably that's why they could take Leadership multiple times.

If you are not converting to 3.5, then P. 46 of the DMG explains pretty well how cohorts work:

Once a character has a cohort, the cohort earns XP at one-half the rate a PC would. She does not automatically gain levels as the leader's Leadership score improves, nor does the leader's leadership score limit her level
