I own a copy of a book, is it then legal for me to find a copy of this book online? Or would I need to buy it somewhere in an online format? Where could I buy it at in an online format?

It is legal to find an online copy copy if the publisher/author has made it available on line. Some books have become open see some of the classics at www.promo.net/pg baen has some titles online. I don't who sells downloads of books.

If joe blow jasper has photocopy/pdf/ word/ etc his copy of phb or star trek books or any other book which is still in the copywrite of the author/publisher, contact him first and say bad jasper then contact his isp for him having illegal stuff on his web page.

Not in most cases. For instance, I own the 3.0 PHB... that doesn't make it legal for me to download it. It has to be publically available from the publisher. To use a parallel example, finding video games roms online and downloading them is (read: IS) illegal, whether or not you own the game.

There are a lot of common misconceptions when it comes to copyright law. Most of them are feeble excuses to try and make it okay to pirate stuff, when it's neither morally nor legally right.

Well, I don't see that it's MORALLY wrong to download something you own in one format to use on your laptop or something. It isn't legal, no, but I don't see it as Wrong with a capital W.

However, the problem is, it lets anyone download it, regardless of of they own it or not.
