Not a very productive session this week, with only 3 players present and lots of disruption as terrible weather on my end caused the internet to keep cutting in and out, but at least we started to get things moving again after three weeks of holiday stuff. After recapping their last few moves, they decided to explore the two remaining tunnels in this section they'd seen but not gone down. First, the short tunnel leading to room 15. The gate to this room is intentionally easy to pick, but they still wasted a knock spell to get through it rather than trying the mechanical way. After all the trouble with the rug, they did not step on the mosaic, but examined it carefully with detect magic up, which revealed the combo of alteration and illusion magic. This made them wary enough that when they sent another summoned pseudonatural dog in to test it out, I could give them the next hint, the blades that seemed to slice it up were illusions, but the creature disappearing afterwards was a very real effect. They remained cautious after this, and instead of stepping on it to see what would happen, went off and explored corridor 13 first, which also let them discover the other side of the secret door they'd missed first time around. This didn't get them any further into the dungeon, but did at least get them the hint to one of the future puzzles on the murals, which they spent quite some time mulling over and doublechecking that they hadn't seen any animal-headed beings of those particular species in the previous statues or carvings. Since that didn't appear to be of any immediate use and they'd explored all the tunnels in the upper section, they had no choice but to either take the route the sniper had blundered into before, or step onto the mosaic and see what it really did to you underneath that illusion. (which is an illusory choice in itself, as those of you who've read the adventure know they send you to basically the same place.) They all held hands, just in case it tried to send them to different places and stepped onto it simultaneously. This of course took them straight to room 18, which the sniper recognised instantly and teleported them straight back. They were going to have to fight that undead illithid to get any further, which they naturally assumed was a full-blown alhoun rather than a reskinned hag and a much more formidable opponent than she actually is. (to my secret amusement) So they're going to wait both OOC and IC, hopefully let any short-term buffs she put up expire, then go back in again next session, when hopefully more players will be present. Let's hope next session is longer and progresses things forward a bit more.
