After a war turned their ultra-tech against them people stepped away from it & many of the crimes he's consulted on the investigations involve magic levels of tech and/or complicated political situations between powerful organizations. You can also really feel his struggle with addiction</li> <li data-xf-list-type="ul"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31349555-transmigration" target="_blank">warlock of the magus world</a> translation of an asian web novel or something. It starts in what pretty much becomes clear as a post apocalypse version of a very eberron inspired world & the real value is how much depth it goes into with magic as a science, schools that teach magic, etc & how it affects the world. Not only that, it effecively spends a few hundred chapters exploring dal quor the quori & dreams before eventually turning the page to what is all but explicitly called forgotten realms giving the reader a great night & day example of how much fr's over abundance of plot armor hurts the capability for interesting stories with depth to the point that the main character occasionally calls it out. also on top of effectively describing those worlds & their systems from a magic as a science perspective it does an awesome job of reimagining and extending the crystal spheres & sphere travel/exploration/invasion into things that are much more meaningful & easy to convert to an average game</li> <li data-xf-list-type="ul"><a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11737387-fated?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=fpEVJ1XJEJ&rank=3" target="_blank">Alex verus</a> Prophecy is a big thing for eberron & he is off the charts skilled at predicting the future to the point where he can use it to stand against people far beyond him in power.
