Oh, then I have something you might like! More on that later when I figure out how to get the ball rolling on that in the forums. Going back to the OPs question of intended playstyle. It's going to depend on what the goal of the game is. If it's to see who has the biggest number, it's going to need to have systems that support big numbers. If it's to simulate living in a fantasy world, it's going to need to focus on simulation. If it's focused on story, they system needs to be designed around story. If you want to have all of it, you're going to need to start layering your systems and interweaving them using as few variables and hooks to keep the system light and nimble, unless you're just going to simulate everything which I don't think the market would like that. The "correct playstyle" will be using those systems for their intended purposes. This was my issue with D&D 3.x, it was too restrictive to create the type of characters I wanted and the combat system would put people to sleep. My game design philosophy has been to really break down what players are interacting with when they're playing a game. There's the system that governs the variables, how players interact with that system, and the genre (fantasy, sci-fi, modern) where the game takes place. I can do 100 pages on how how to deconstruct game systems to their core but I won't do that here. Needless to say, you need to really understand as much as possible about what problem you're trying to solve. That endeavor is going to raise many more questions though, as I'm sure you've already discovered.
