Let's talk about the Gravorg

the Jester

Legend
For those of you that don't know, the gravorg is like a giant gravity-controlling raccoon, originally from the 3e Monster Manual 2.

I converted it some time ago, but am redoing many of my conversion in light of the improved monster mechanics post-MM3 and my own improved understanding and mastery of monster design. However, I've been thinking it ought to be a solo monster, or at least elite- because what the hell hangs out with it? There really aren't many monsters that like being banged off the ceiling for fun.

OTOH, a gravorg is hardly the super-threatening monstrosity that I think of when I think about a typical solo monster.

Of course, I could change it from a level 12 standard monster to a lower level solo.... I dunno, whaddaya think? Should this guy be an elite instead, and rely on hazards and traps for backup? The MM2 (3e) describes them as "solitary".

Here's the original conversion:

GRAVORG--- Level 12 Controller

Strange inhabitants of the Feywild, gravorg resemble raccoons the size of a horse. These strange creatures have a unique ability to control gravity around them. Often, the sound of a large object smashing repeatedly into the ceiling and then the ground is one’s first clue that he is near a gravorg lair.

There's gravorg stats in the new Gamma World expansion - Legion of Gold. Might wanna check that out for inspiration.

Are you sure the gravorg was first in the 3e MM2?

Hah! I remember these guys. I never realised they were supposed to be that big, though!

As for who would hang around with them, I imagine chaotic little fey sprite things or something. If you could fly and your mate could control gravity, how fun would that be? :p
