Level 3 Colour Spray...

Helow dudes... one of the wizzies in my group wants to research Colour Spray as level 3 spell with higher HDs affected...

His proposal to simply add 2HD to everything was IMHO way over the top... how would you do it?

Edit: I didn't find a similar spell (cone, stunning/blinding) in any d20 book ... do you know one? Or should I tell him to take Glitterdust ?

I don't see +2 HD being too bad, unless you mean as a 2nd level spell. Since the minimum caster level increases by 4 (1st vs 5th) really it would be a fairly underpowered spell at that level comparied to the 1st level version...

2nd level Wizard spells include Hideous Laughter, Hypnotic Pattern and Daze Monster. 3rd level Wizard spells include Deep Slumber, Hold Person and Ray of Exhaustion. So, you have some "book ends" for the spray's powers. The spray should do at least what the 2nd level spells do, but less than the 3rd level examples -- all of which are single-target.

My suggestions:
- All HD: Daze effect (less powerful than Stun effect) for 1d4 founds
- 7 HD or less: Stunned for 1d4 rounds, then Dazed for 1 round
- 4 HD or less: Stunned and Blinded for 2d4 rounds, then Stunned for 1d4 rounds, then Dazed for 1 round

On a successful Will save, the creature is still Dazzled for 1d4 rounds.

I don't think that's too over the top for a 3rd level spell.

Deep Slumber and Hold Person are both 3rd level, so I don't think he's going to be able to get his wish.

Rainbow Pattern at 4th level lets him fascinate 24 HD of critters. I'd let him modify it (into "Rainbow Spray" or whatnot) into an Instantaneous effect that stuns 24 HD of critters for 1d4+1 rounds each.

As a 5th level Enchantment, I'd allow "Arcane Slumber" (puts 20 HD of critters to sleep), but not as an Illusion.
