Assuming the cleric has turn undead available (he hasnt used it during earlier encounters) and the Lich doesnt go first, casting either power word kill or power word stun, each of which either automatically kill or stun the Cleric (no save). Even a Disintegrate spell upscaled to 8th level deals 16d6+40 force damage (DC20 Dex save avoids) and autokills you at 0 HP. How many 8th level clerics are going to pass a DC20 Dex save and have more than 60 or so hit points? Otherwise you now have a CR 21 lich and 40 skeletons to deal with. The Lich likely has mirror image precast (plus globe of invulnerability). I wouldnt be surprised if it didnt also have a contingent spell ready in case of whatever. Why isnt its phylactery safe in a demiplane, and likely also sequestered? At 8th level! I mean come on. The only way the PCs survive here is with ridiculous luck and a very poorly played Lich. The thing has scrying remember. It knows the PCs are coming, it knows what spell load out they have, it knows common spells and tactics they use; it knows the Cleric is the biggest danger. And thats a CRB lich. Personally I'd swap the spell load out (wall of force is a must have, and blade ward gives it resistance against all S/B/P from magic weapons in addition to its total immunity to non magic weapons - all for the cost of 1 legendary action each round. Absorb elements is also a good choice, but possibly a waste seeing as it already has counterspell) I'd be hard pressed not to give the Lich the mandatory robes of the evil archmage and bracers of defence (for AC 20/25 with shield) and spell save DCs of 22/ +14 to hit with cantrips. There is zero chance a party of 8th level PCs survive this if I was DMing. Zero. Ive got my current party about to face a Lich and they're 13th level, loaded out with magic items (and terrified).
