Lightly Armoured, Martial Q-staff Fighter Ideas

First Post
I've been playing with an idea for a lightly armoured, full BAB Fighter build for a couple of years now. One thing he would need is a martial version of the Q-staff, something 1d8/1d8 x2 probably. A pure fighter would work but the heavier armour types and shield prof. would be wasted. The bunches of feats would be welcomed however... Is there a better choice than a pure Fighter? TIA

Take two levels of rogue and do Thief-Acrobat for five levels. Take the Quick STaff style from CW, and Two-Weapon Defense. When you fight defensively, thanks to TWD, tumbling, thief-acrobat, and the style feat, you'll get something like +9 AC over just your armor, plus any Combat Expertise you use.

Forget about a martial quarterstaff. You'd be talking about a single point of damage, and your weapon would be difficult to upgrade since it's not a common weapon. With four levels of fighter, you can take Weapon Specialization, which gets you +2 with both ends. And you can build up your TWF chain to get as many attacks as possible.

After Thief-Acrobat, go to Tempest to pick up some more defense, some more two weapon tricks, and stay with your light armor theme. You'll pick up +3 AC in light armor and your TWF penalty will be zero.

That puts you at Fighter 4/Rogue 2/Thief-Acrobat 5/Tempest 5, which leaves you four levels to play with and only a three point BAB ding.

Find a game system where damage is a factor of /based off of skill with the weapon, rather than the weapon itself. In D&D land, rogues come the closest to this but they don't have the BAB you desire.

The build I describe, with a +1 shocking/+1 shocking quarterstaff, can do a lot of damage.

The amount of damage actually caused by the weapon is usually not significant. It's what you can add to it.

Fighter with a level or two in monk could also be an option. Pick up the ability to flurry with your staff, stunning fist channeled thru your staff if it's Ki Focus, or just clear it with the DM to let you use it ONLY thru the staff and not unarmed. Then into Weapon Master from good ol' Sword and Fist.

Two-Weapon Fighting, Weapon Focus, Weapon Spec, Quick Staff, etc.

Is there a feat that'd let you deflect arrows with your staff, by any chance?

Edit: oh yeah, and as mentioned - don't sweat the martial staff too much. If you want to put out damage just use it as a two-handed weapon for a round or two and power attack.

If you want to do more damage with a staff you could do worse than 50gp Shillelagh oil (from the DMG). Makes both ends of your quarterstaff do 2d6 base damage for a minute. Yummy!

Don't forget the potion of enlarge person, and a side of fries.

Crit ranges matter a fair amount unless most damage is from bonus dice.

If you weren't convinced about full BAB, I'd aim for a Monk 11/Ftr9, and get the full TWF tree and lots of potions of shillelagh oil.

This will give you a BAB of +17 and a full attack of:

+17/+17/+17/+12/+7/+2 and +17/+12/+7

(add assorted bonuses for feats, shillelagh, strength etc

So 9 attacks for 2d6+1(shillelagh) + strength + specialisation +whatever else.

That could be pretty nasty, especially if power attack crept in their somewhere.

Cheers

Yeah, the whole Shillelagh + Spikes + Enlarge Person + Power Attack thing really can add up to a lot of ouch.
