Living expenses

Do any dms charge living expenses to their pcs? I mean making them buy new clothes periodically or making sure that they buy food. I have heard that some dms make sure that armor and equipment are kept up. or do you allow your players to amass wealth staying in their ratty, filthly, "1st level clothes"?

Some what. They can camp and hunt, but ussually the PCs just buy it all in a town or some such. They are pretty good at keeping all this stuff down and doing it themselves.

In the game I DM currently, I don't bother.

BUT the game I'm a player in, the DM uses something similar to the Living Greyhawk rules for paying for your living expenses. We also are all members of an adventuring guild, and have to pay dues to that as well.

A lot depends upon the players, I think. In my game, the players were mostly people who had not played in a very long time if at all, and it didn't seem like that sort of bookkeeping was a good idea. But I feel the pressure of money problems a lot more keenly in the game where we have to pay for things, so I can see the advantages to both systems, depending up on the group.
