She glows, like all her kind, with a golden light, and it seems that her scales are molten gold. She is quiet and reflective, although she can be quite passionate about protecting that which she holds dear. She is more likely to wait and listen before offering an opinion or plan, letting others air their ideas first. There are rumors that when she was younger, she was quite the firebrand, itching to join the flights of dragons that flew to battle against the evil ones. No one knows what happened to turn that wyrmling seething with rage into the calm and contemplative dragon of today, but most agree that it was a change for the best.

[/sblock]

History:

[sblock]

Luminous was just a hatchling when they came.

She recalls the moments of terror when the flight of chromatics swept down on her little family; the first wave of flame, ice, and acid that lead the evil ones; the defiant screams of her parents as they dove upward to protect their offspring; the panicked rush of her elder sister, last survivor of their parent’s previous hatchings, as she gathered the clutch together at their mother’s orders and fled with them; the sounds of battle as their parents held off the evil ones long enough for them to escape.

Luminous had always known of the danger of the other dragons, of course. The fact that dragonkind was at war was hammered deep into every hatchling before they even broke through the shell. But the thought that they would attack the lair – so deep in the good alliance’s territory – had never crossed her mind.

At the end of the panicked flight – fearful of hearing pursuing chromatics – was a patrol, a small flight of metallics that had landed to rest and eat briefly before continuing. They were surprised – nay, shocked – to see a young radiant dragon, carrying three new-hatched wyrmlings, drop exhausted out of the sky and gasp out that their lair had been attacked. The dragons left at once, leaving one behind to guard Luminous and her siblings.

They returned after dark, grim, exhausted, injured, and missing two of their number. A small handful of items were somberly handed to Luminous’ sister Sanasa – all that was left of the hoard of their proud parents, and this only because they had been on the bodies. Their parents had distracted the chromatics long enough that the flight had decided not to go after the younglings; instead, they had just finished squabbling over the hoard when the metallics arrived.

The years after that blur together in Luminous’ mind. A swirling maelstrom of grief, anger, fear, and exhaustion make the time hard to recall. She remembers fleeing, as the evil ones pushed ever deeper into the previously safe territory; she remembers the only lightly-concealed sorrow of her elder sister, who tried to raise Luminous and her siblings the best she could.

As Luminous grew, she developed a fierce desire to protect, not only her own siblings, but all of the good dragons. A desire to destroy the evil that pursued them. And, damningly, a desire for vengeance.

When she spoke of her wish for revenge on those that had hurt them – that continued to hurt them, though they did nothing to the evil ones but defend themselves – her elder sister sharply reprimanded her.

“Vengeance is unworthy of you, of your blood. That is not the teachings of Tamara, whom is our Patron. Instead, seek to guide and protect those that are kind of heart. Fight, if you must – but fight to protect, to vanquish evil, not for revenge.” Her sister then gave her a sad look. “Revenge,” Sanasa said softly, “will only lower you to their level and lead you down their path. You must resist that, and all evil, in order to truly win the battles ahead.”

Although she could see there was wisdom in her sister’s words, Luminous could not accept it. She still planned vengeance for her parents, for never being given the chance to really know them.

She learned, instead, not to speak of her plans. She practiced and trained in the arts of war and the skills of battle, the tactics of claw and wing and breath, so that when she was old enough she could join those fighting the evil ones.

Then one night she had a dream.

It started as a reoccurring dream; her parents, battling the evil ones on that long-ago day. She could see, behind the fighting dragons, herself and her siblings fleeing. She watched, seething with rage and sorrow as her parents fought, glorious in the sunlight, their scales shining like molten gold itself. She watched as the evil ones overwhelmed them, their light muted behind the shadows and bodies of the others, who bore them down to the ground. She knew what would come next; the evil ones would savage her parents, tearing and ripping at their still-living bodies in an orgy of blood and pain, making sure that they suffered dearly before death.

She cried out in pain and grief, and the scene was washed away in a sourceless glow of silver light.

Dreams, young one. Just dreams. They fade away if thee wills it. A resonating voice spoke to her, seeming to echo directly into her mind, and soothing her heart and soul.

“Who are you?” She said into the blinding light – blinding, even to one of her kind.

One who would guide thee onto the right path, the voice responded. One who grieves at the destruction of all held dear. One who would have thee as my warrior, to defend and protect that which is most precious.

The light was fading now… no, not fading, but tempering so that she could see. A landscape appeared from the featureless light, a lush land of grass and trees. Luminous stood upon a rocky outcropping overlooking the land, which was now beginning to gain color beneath the silver glow that highlighted all. Even as she watched, a herd of deer – large and healthy – broke cover from the trees below to roam upon the plains. She half-opened her wings to swoop down; it had been long since such prey had been within the reach of any dragon, prey that was not stringy and tough. Just as it had been long since the earth looked as it did in the dream.

Luminous looked upward, into the sky, and could almost feel the wind singing to her, calling to her to fly. She shook her head and gazed at the silver-tinted rock beneath her claws. “I am no one,” she spoke to the resonating voice. “I am nothing. All I wish is revenge on those who have hurt me and my family.” She clenched her talons, ripping great gouges in the earth. The admission shamed her, made her feel lower than the lowest worm. For the first time, she truly understood her sister’s words. “I am not worthy to be anyone’s warrior, anyone’s defender.” She stared at the furrows she had torn into the ground fixedly. “I even refuse to choose a proper name,” she whispered. “I keep my childish egg-name because it was given to me by my parents, and it’s all I have left of their love.”

Thou art mistaken, the voice spoke back, resonating with love and forgiveness. It is just because thee recognizes the unworthiness of thy desire for revenge that makes thee worthy.

Luminous looked up, and beheld a great silver dragon reclining in the sky above and before her, eyes shining like the sun itself. She gasped, and bowed, showing the greatest of honors she could think of. She felt bathed in the dragon’s light, and it seemed as the light of love and kindness, although there was a shadow of mourning for a great and terrible loss.

Thou art my chosen one, the dragon said. Luminous looked up. The silver one reached one great claw forward and touched her forehead. Luminous felt more than heard the click of claw as it gently touched her scales. Thee now bears my mark on your heart and soul, and will bear it forever more. The dragon begin to fade, as did the landscape surrounding them. Thou wilt support those in need, and fight to protect those who cannot protect themselves, Tamara said, the voice fading even as everything else did. And when the time comes, thou wilt fight to protect that which is most precious.

“Wait!” Luminous shouted, scrambling to her feet. “Don’t go! How will I know? How will I know when the time comes?”

Thee will know, Came the answer, so faint that Luminous had to strain to hear it. When the time comes, thee will know.

Luminous awoke with a gasp, sitting straight up. Her clutchmates grumbled and her brother roughly turned, snapping his tail at her in irritation before falling back asleep.

“Luminous? Are you alright?” The voice of her sister Sanasa drifted from the darkness, near her own clutch – her first – of eggs.

“I’m fine,” Luminous called softly back. “Just… just a dream.” But she wondered.

Time moved on, and Luminous grew. She grew not only in size, but in power as well. She could feel the touch of ?? on her heart and soul, and treasured it. She gained powers to detect and fight evil, granted to her by her God. She waited, trained, and wondered what it was that was most precious.

Then came the arrival of the silver Cyrem, bearing two of the lost DragonShards and a plan to recover the rest. And Luminous finally understood.

That which was most precious was freedom.

Luminous told her family her plans. Tearfully, Sanasa gave her the items that had assisted their parents in their final battle. Donning them somberly, Luminous took her leave of her clutchmates, her elder sister, and her young nieces and nephews.

“You will always be in my heart,” she told them. “I love you all.” She launched herself into the air and winged her way towards the gathering of dragons volunteering for the mission. [/sblock] History: [sblock] Luminous was just a hatchling when they came. You must resist that, and all evil, in order to truly win the battles ahead.” Although she could see there was wisdom in her sister’s words, Luminous could not accept it. “I keep my childish egg-name because it was given to me by my parents, and it’s all I have left of their love.” Thou art mistaken, the voice spoke back, resonating with love and forgiveness. How will I know when the time comes?” Thee will know, Came the answer, so faint that Luminous had to strain to hear it. Ready and willing to do whatever was needed to regain that oh-so-precious gift of freedom. [/sblock]
