Looking for a Good Fantasy Book!

For heroic Fantasy stuff any of David Gemmells Drenai novels, Legend, Waylander etc are good. Even though they're all set in roughly the same place each book stands alone.
Morningstar, also by Gemmell is one of my favourite stand alone books.

A short trilogy with a Japanese flavour is the Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn is great, especially the first book, Across the Nightingale Floor.

And Good Omens, if you enjoy Pratchetts humour.

I'm looking to use it on a good fantasy book that won't lead to a long book series. The first book in a nice compact trilogy or, better yet, a one shot story.

O.k. so maybe it's breaking this restriction, but I'll suggest Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos novels anyway (start with The Book of Jhereg), since each book is relatively self contained (i.e. you won't miss part of any continuing stroy if you stop at any point along the line).

You could also try To Reign in Hell, which is tand alone, though potentially hard to find.

Tad Williams' Dragonbone Chair, Stone of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower (a must for Fantasy fans)
-Or-
Lynn Abbey's Sanctuary and the new Thieves' World anthology starting with Turning Points.
-Or-
John Marco' Jackal of Nar (excellent 1st book, the rest is ok)
-Or-
Mickey Zucker Reichart (sp?) Last of the Renshai
-Or-
Glen Cook's The Black Company (sorry, I can't help it)
There are more, but these haven't been mentioned yet.

Good luck.
