My recommendations are:
The Shadow War series by Chris Claremont (with George Lucas): Shadow Moon, Shadow Dawn, and Shadow Star. It's a continuation of the movie, Willow. The series is much darker and serious than the movie. Claremont has a great knack for writing magic. The whole series is excellent.
Witchhunter by C.L. Werner. This is a Warhammer novel. I didn't have much hope of reading a great story when I picked it up, but it's a pretty good book and shows off the dark and dreary Warhammer setting very well.
Any of the Conan stories.
Any of the Elric stories.
Edit: How could I have forgotten Stephen King's Dark Tower series. From book one to the finale (book 7), was a wild ride. A must read for any King fan.
