Looking for a New Setting to Conquer

It does stray from "core", but my vote would be for Midnight. If your evil, whats better than working under the only god present pursuing rebel groups, hunting spell-casters, and defeating the elves and dwarves on the frontlines.

Its also probably one of the grittiest campaign settings out there. Its perfect for an evil campaign.
I'd add that Midnight as published has the world already overrun by evil. It'll be better, IMO, to use the (rather extensive) history information there and put the PCs behind the triumph of the dark god over the world. The PCs would replace the Night Kings as the rulers of the conquered lands, and the instigators of the good races' downfall.

I'd probably go for Eberron or, maybe, Birthright. My first choice would've been Greyhawk, though. I can understand disliking the Duchy of Geoff, but what's wrong with Furyondy and the Flanaess?

Have you considered the Iron Kingdoms setting from Privateer Press?

This is the exact setting I was thinking of, too. If you are going to play a campaign where the characters are evil, I think this is a setting that could really work, without getting out of hand. And there are some really neat bad guys to work for.

Take a look at the Wilderlands. LOTS of area to take over there, and a few solid BBEG to work for.

Absolutely my opinion as well. You can't go wrong with the Wilderlands. Plus - no stupid place names.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I think the best world for my needs is going to be either the Forgotten Realms or Áereth.

I was thinking about this thread and had an interesting idea for a campaign. Like your idea, the PCs play evil minions of a Sauron-esque BBEG, but in this case their master has been defeated, LotR style, by an unlikely alliance of men, elves and dwarves and a plot device magic item.

The forces of darkness are on the run, harried by paladins and other good guys. With the unifying presence of the dark lord gone, there is now constant infighting and struggles for power. Things look bad for the bad guys! The PCs would most likely be evil humanoids - orcs, goblinoids or gnolls. They would fight other humanoids, rival tribes, high power former minions of the BBEG such as fiends and also invading humans and demihumans, crusaders and adventurer types.

On topic - I'd throw another mention for Kingdoms of Kalamar - chunks of it are nicely blank to be filled in as apt. We played it core rules and it suited well... There's a hobgoblin nation that could make for a fun PC base? Always liked Lawful Evil for those types of games.

I read a book partly along these lines a while ago.

Grunts by Mary Gentle.

Found it a very entertaining read. Although theres some moderately gross stuff in there - not for the faint of heart. Halflings. Shudder.

I do like the idea for a campaign premise though!
