Im the DM in Question Being the DM in question I first want to laud Mistwell for trying to find ways to enhance the roleplaying value of his character. With that in mind I hope to be open-minded about the changes he's considering. I am somewhat concerned with balance issues, however. The suggestion about changing the way the spells look, etc, sounds a great deal like the Spell Thematics feat from Faerun. Since he's not interested in the mechanics of the feat (+1CL for 1 spell/lvl, bonus to spellcraft DC for countering) I'm considering just letting him change the style of the spells. Should I just ignore the fact that his Flame Strikes look a lot different when it comes to NPC perception? The suggestion about altering the cleric's spell list gives me more concern. The cleric is already the most versatile of the spellcasters- access to ALL divine spells, no scribing, etc. Not to mention domain spells- some of which are unique to the domain. Letting a cleric swap out access to some spells in order to get to spells not normally on the cleric's spell list opens up the potential for cherry-picking style of abuse. Can anyone suggest a means of allowing this sort of thing without making the cleric's spellcasting abilities more powerful than they already are? Perhaps instead of swapping out spells we should just look further for published divine spells that are more in line with his character concept.
