First Post
To all,

I am looking for information on d20 conversions of Diablo. I know there use to be a website called Sanctuary. Any information or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lobo

Diablo was one of the first settings adapted to d20, by WotC itself, no less. There were two books, couldn't tell you what was in them, but check the reviews section of this site.

I have three of WoTC Diablo d20 books. The first one is called "Diablo II The Awakening" written by Bruce Cordell and Mike Selinker for 2nd edition rules; it was a great product. Diablo d20 has two 3rd edition books: "Diablo II Diablerie" and "Diablo II to Hell and Back." Diablerie is a poorly written book that uses a 25 character level system and other game mechanics that I do not care for. I was hoping someone might have done their own d20 conversions. Also I intend to have Diablo Assassin, Bard, Druid, and Monk character classes available to play.

Not Going Away

To all,

I have decided that I shall keep this topic on the first page until I get some answers.

Thanks,

Lobo

Well, I doubt that method'll get you much more than it already has. What you might try is seeing if anyone wants to lend a hand in converting Diablo to d20. I certainly wouldn't mind lending a hand. I'm sure a few other people wouldn't.

You may be right. Anyways I would like to work with you on converting Diablo to d20 3.5.

Alright. First step, I suppose, would be to decide on how strict of a conversion you plan on doing, and what feel you want to go for. I believe that, aside from the horrible rules Diablerie used, one reason they did so poorly is that they tried to make, literally, a pen & paper version of Diablo, complete with "kill everything that moves," (and respawning, if I remember correctly.)

My feelings center more on working with the Diablo world to create a d20 setting that keeps the roleplaying feel - semi-gothic, epic battle between light and dark - of Diablo, without so much the hack & slash feel. That in mind, I'd suggest using - modified, perhaps - D&D core classes, a different magic system (spell slots wouldn't work with the feel,) and prestige classes for most actual D&D classes - Paladin of Khanduras, (is Khanduras where the paladins came from? I don't remember,) Sister of the Sightless Eye, that kind of thing. Far as I'm concerned, there's no need for there to be an "Amazon" core class - they're fighters, really, that just focus (feats) on the spear or bow. Create a prestige class for higher ups, with some of the neat 'zon abilities, and I'd be happier.

Oh, just remembered something - one thing I don't think would be good is to use Diablo's method of all skills having levels 1-20 (+, with magic.) It simply doesn't work well with D&D - something like, say, an Amazon's Valkyrie is already a strong ability, and, in a D&D game, one wouldn't expect them to access it until at least 15th level or so.

FWIW back when there was a Diablo forum on the WoTC boards there was one poster who did PrC conversions of all of the Diablo classes (1 & 2). I remember them actually being pretty decent.

Of course the Diablo forum is long gone & I can't remember who the poster was....but I'm sure there is someone over there (WoTC boards) who archived copies or at least remembers who wrote them up.

I actually liked the feel of the amazon, barbarian, and paladin Diablo 3e classes, the choose from a menu of class appropriate ever more powerful abilities was a great idea. Unfortunately it was marred by some unworkeable or unbalanced powers (particularly in the paladin). The non alignment barbarian and paladin with flexible class features particularly appealed to me.

I would keep those ideas as a framework and rework the class power choice mechanics so they actually worked and try to get them balanced.

I would use some of the 3e monster stat blocks, update them for 3.5 and use the 2e descriptions for flavor, or possibly use the game guide descriptions of them.

The magic item powers would have to be rescaled to 3e power and gp costs instead of a flat 250 gp per +1 bonus.
