Looking for Equipment Care and Maintenance Rules

d20 games do not normally fuss with care and maintenance rules for equipment, but I know a few rules are out there, somewhere.

If you know where such an animal can be found, I'm looking for it. Any leads to your favorite d20 or OGL equipment book would be appreciated.

I found some rules in the d20 Slaine game. I've also got the From Stone to Steel book, which is fantastic and will probably be the base of what I develop if I don't find a better rule set for gear upkeep.

Do you know of any others?

Before I make up my own stuff, I'm curious as to what's out there. I've got a player that likes his character being a Weaponsmith, so I'm trying to give him things to do.

That's what good GM's do, right? They recognize what a player is turned on about and tries to incorporate that into the game.

So, if you've got a lead to a book or some rules somewhere, please let me know.

TIA

When you say weapon smith, what does he envision by that?

"I want to make a cool new sword every level" is vastly different from "ok, roll to see if you properly cleaned the gunk off your blade last night". And different again from "the orcs sunder all your weapon. Now you get to spend downtime fixing it with dice rolls. Meanwhile, the rest of teh party can cross off 5 gp each for new weapons."

First off, my group and I are playing the Conan RPG, so there aren't new magical weapons found by the group every other game session.

My thought is to implement some sort of weapon degration/upkeep system where upkeep of weapons is not assumed but rolled--therefore making a smith a very valuable edition to the party.

I'd like to see the weapon degrade and become less useful through use--something that the smith can fix.

Presumably adventurers spend a portion of their daily rest-period doing maintaining/undoing normal wear-n-tear of their respective equipment in mundane fashion via take10,20 on the relevant skills. This would be especially true for armor/weapon smiths.

The question especially becomes moot if cantrips/Mending/unseen servant are available.

It's not a moot point in my game. But, it is a fine line between a boring game and an interesting one.

I want to make the care of gear important without making it boring. I'd also like to see shields wear out; players pick the dead for weapons because their sword has too big a chip in the blade; money spent on oil, whetstone, leatherstrips, and the like.

I didn't realise a sword had to be magical to be "cool" :erm:

My point remains -- what does your player want to be doing with the fact that his character is a smithy?

You could do something simple if you want to base it on a roll. On a Natural 1, a weapon is damaged (-1 attack, -1 damage) and roll again. If another 1 is rolled, the weapon is broken and unusable until repaired. And you could have the "damaged" category stack, so each time a natural 1 is rolled the weapon gradually gets worse.
