looking for history book

First Post
I've been looking for a book depicting all armors/weapons for a given culture/time period in both text and picture. Is there such a book (or multiple books)?

I know there are several role-playing books about the subject, but I'm interested in the actual historical truth more than anything.

If anyone could point me in a direction, it would be very much appreciated.

Actually, From Stone to Steel provides all that and has already translated the weapons into D&D terms. I think it won an Ennie two years ago.

Actually, I find Stone's book rather good in some ways and wildly inaccurate in others. If you want to know about Japanese arms & armour, with a fair nod to China and Korea, he is your man. With the European material (especially with Eastern Europe) he accepts some pretty specious material and sources, much of it outdated even in his own day. So Stone is a good place to start for very general information, but a very bad place to end.

What would you suggest for the European material?

Two of the best sources, to my eye that way, have already been mentioned -- the Osprey books and Oakeshott. The Osprey books are good because they are constantly revising the line, thus newer material gets incorporated all the time. Oakeshott is fantastic for chivalric arms and armour, having even worn a fair amount of it and helped in designing modern equivalents of weapons found at archaeological sites.

**sigh** Due to a move, most of my library is packed away at the moment otherwise I'd recommend a couple other books. David Nicolle is good name to look for, however -- he's written a lot of material for Osprey, but also has books of his own out there. I'll do a bit of googling and find a few more sites and names by morning. :)
