los angeles area to try out different games

* Interested in trying out a variety of RPGs?
* Does your main role-playing group only play one or two systems?
* Do you have a shelf full of interesting rpgs you’ve only read, never played?
* Are you getting back into rpgs after a while and are surprised at the variety of games out there?
* Are you interested in designing your own rpgs and want exposure to some innovative games?

A group of Los Angeles area players have put together a group based on these goals. We currently meet about once a month in Glendale on Saturdays, and we’re looking for more players from the Central/Northeast L.A./Pasadena/San Fernando valley/San Gabriel valley areas (or anywhere in the region if you’re willing to drive).

The group works something like a hybrid between a bookclub and a play- test group. We try to meet once a month and take turns GM-ing different rpgs. Whoever is the GM brings pre-generated characters or writes up a short “cheat sheet” summarizing the rules. That way we don’t need to spend tons of time reading rules and can jump into playing the game. We’ve found that playing a game for a single session gives us a pretty good sense of how it runs and whether we’d want to try it again some time. By the way, if you don’t like being gamemaster and would rather just play, that’s fine.

So far we’ve played a mix of newer, “indie” games and older classics, including Donjon, Paranoia, and Soap. We’ve also played some board games after or in-between rpg sessions. One of our players moved out of the state and another changed jobs, so we’re looking to bring in at least 2 new players. Since we’re not playing an extended campaign, no one needs to commit to come to every meeting.

If you would potentially be interested, email me at:

It would help if you could let me know your age and some the games you would be most interested in trying out.
