Disclaimer This book was a part of a generous "Can't make Gencon" promo on ENWorld. I figured I'd repay the gift with a review. Lost Books 9 The Longstrider’s Journal is a short 9 page PDF by Clockwork Golems Workshop. It details 11 ranger spells and a couple of Alchemical concoctions as well as a magic item spellbook hybrid The spells and alchemical compounds in the PDF can enhance many outdoor focused games. Appearance. This book comes zipped at half a megabyte It will be easy to download on most any connection. It is nicely book marked with each spell getting its own link. Very classy. While lightly illustrated and easy to read on screen, the book is going to be an ink hog to print. There are a lot of blue borders and the like, enough to make the book twice as large as say Rise of the Ghouls which has more than twice the page count. I would have appreciated less clutter or a printable version but for under a buck I won’t complain. Contents The book begins with a nice bit of intro fluff that lets you plug the book into most campaign types and gives a nifty explanation why these spells are on several types of spell list. Following that a really helpful Bardic Knowledge/Knowledge Arcana difficulty chart. Little stuff like this really make a product much more useful. I like that The next side bar is a description of the magic item spell book hybrid with all the stats and needed game information except for some reason the cost of the spells Next are the eleven spells: The list is a stealth enhancing Bird Cry cantrip, Campfire Song an interesting concept spell that suffers from being poorly written and ambiguous in its effects, Cloud Bridge, Feather Step which allow you do the Legolas LOTR snow run on any surface (perfect for Wuxia game too) Lonely Road a very cool Shadow Walk variant, Neighbors Greeting which aids diplomacy checks, Phantom Firelight, Sanctity Path which is a strange ward compulsion combo spell, the nifty Settle Pack, Steedmark a cool animal handling cantrip, the Travelers Trance spell which allows forced marches and lastly the Walkers Baton which allow you to send you staff to create a false trail to lead away enemies. The last spell is suffers a bit from ambiguous writing but is otherwise quite nifty. Next are two alchemical items travelers balm and a fatigue fighting treated velamnroot On the whole I like this book. The spells are interesting, and fit the feel of D&D very well. The seem like the type of magic that would exist in a D&D game world that might be used (at least by travelers) on a day to day basis yet are still uswefull to adventurers. That is a category that is quite lacking in most supplements. Also the Alchemical items are really excellent. I think that CWG really should consider a book of Alchemical items as a stand alone. The items I have seen is this book and others are just that good. Despite the flaws in the writing of a few spells it is useful and well written. Recomended. In fact the next time you are on RPG.now add it to your cart. At 75 cents you can't go wrong.
