Got it figured out, now I know how i'm combining Old Owl Well and Wyvern Tor and Smoke Plume Mountain. The PCs are heading out next time to take care of the orcs at WT and maybe Cragmaw Castle afterward. Before they reach the Tor they'll stumble onto Old Owl Well and the Red Wizard Kosk. Here's the adventure seed from White Plume. The wizard had obtained a book outlining the history of the mountain, the artifacts within, and the book was even bundled with several quiescent K-imprint scrolls. The wizard had "memorized" one, automatically imprinting him with a partial copy of Keraktis. He failed to decipher the other scrolls, but his forehead was emblazoned with a "K" tattoo and he has a burning desire to acquire more power from the mountain, but the orcs of Wyvern Tor have been a deterrent. The wizard is doomed, he's been a host to the spell for over a month and will soon slide into madness. Kosk now thinks he is "Keraktis", and that won't mean much to the PCs at first until they read and comprehend the history book. They'll be tempted I'm sure to learn or cast a new spell from the scroll, at which point at least one of them will be hooked. Furthermore, the beholder under the mountain in the Seven Pillar Hall, and subsequently under Wave Echo Cave as well, has knowledge of the artifacts Wave, Whelm and Blackrazor and wants them for himself. Maybe there's a way to tie the Black Spider to this as well, even though he's dead now and reanimated as a zombie under the beholder mage's control.
