Lotr Dvd?

Anyone knowledgeble in DVDS want to answer this question.

Did they really need to spread the movie over 2 disks in the extended version?

It's like what 3.5 hours I guess I thought 1 DVD could handle that. Did lame extras like a "cool" menu push it over the 1 disk mark.

No, the menus certainly wouldn't push it over, and commentaries typically take much less space than the video itself.

The reason is this: DVD's do not have a consistent bandwidth. It is possible to tweak the settings to maximize space, or maximize quality. In this case, they chose to maximize quality of picture.

The technical reviews I've read have indicated that the transfer on the Extended DVD is among the best. I'm certainly glad that they went for maximum quality.

The extended cut is more like 4 hours long, and has 4 seperate commentary tracks. That alone probably pushed it into 2 DVDs, even without the excellent quality image.

It's superb quality. I wish I had access to a HDTV to play it on, but even on my 50 inch normal TV, or my 19 inch monitor, it's evident how good the transfer is.
