LOTR RPG: anyone planning on getting the AG?

Now that the Adventure Game has been released, is there anyone here that is planning on getting it or otherwise purchased it already? I hate polls, so I won't go there, but what does everyone think of an introductory RPG product selling for $29.95? I might still get it, but need to some reviews first. But more than likely I will wait for the full version in the spring.

I think there's a review up on RPG.Net. I'm torn between wanting to get it very badly and being wary of the cost of something that I really and truly know I don't need. As I understand it, the maps are truly beautiful as are the components, but it just seems a tad much right now.

Yuck. For $30...

I'll save my money for CoC d20, or any of the other cool stuff coming out. If you truly want the RPG, wait a month for the real stuff. I think the $10 for the D&D adventure game is great, however. (I picked mine up for $4 at half.com)

Naaah. I doubt if I'll even get the RPG book. Given I have access to pretty much all of ICE's MERP material, I really doubt I'll buy anything from the new game.

About the only thing I'm curious about is the magic system for the new game. Not curious enough to buy the RPG book though.

I bought it a couple of weeks ago and think it would make a good intro to RPGs, possibly a better intro the D&D adventure game particularly if the potential converts have just seen the LOTR movie.

Otherwise, it's pretty expensive for what you get. Nevertheless, I'm sure I'll get some value from the Mines of Moria battlemats in a D&D campaign.

Cheers

I picked it up tonight at a fairly significant discount. On the one hand it is a very good, simple introduction to the concept of role-playing. On the other hand, it is totally worthless if you have any clue how to play a role-playing game. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing since it is intended for novices, but there is no way this thing is worth the full price of admission even as an intro. I could see paying $10 or $15 for this, but $30 is pure price gouging.

For those that are contemplating picking this up as a preview for the full game, don't bother as you don't get very much at all in the way of system preview. Just that you have a roll+skill+modifiers mechanic. No magic preview. The main thing I got out of it is that this will be incredibly easy to convert back and forth to and from d20 with. Oh, and the Balrog is NOT someone you want to armwrestle. But you probably knew that. ;)

The only thing (other than price) which really rubs me the wrong way is the section on totalling points to determine if the players 'win'. Makes it feel like a game of Diablo. This is apparently just a product of the fact that you do not have advancement in the adventure game. Judging from what has been said on the Decipher message boards, 'leveling is actually going to be pretty neat in the full rpg.

I have to check out the review, but doubt I will buy the product. (Getting my group to try new games is an epic task.:) )

ColonelHardisson posted an excellent LOTR thread in the Rules forum. You might want to take a look at it.
