I mean, c'mon, it was only a year after his death that the War of the Worlds radio broadcast caused mass hysteria. I'm pretty sure that that wouldn't hapen today without a conspiracy among all major broadcasters. His stories were creepy but not scary, kind of a sub genre of horror. (although I must admit I have never read a story that was scary, something about the printed word just doesn't translate into scary for me) I really enjoyed the oddity of them. Something about the "things man was never meant to know" schtick strikes a chord with me and he wrote about that very well (and Lovecraft didn't have a ponderous style like Tolkien <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f642.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt=":)" title="Smile    :)"  data-smilie="1"data-shortname=":)" />) Unfortunately its very hard to say exactly why they work so well for me. enjoy</blockquote>
