Lycanthropy - Question about transformation due to damage in combat

In the section on Lycanthropes, it states "Thereafter, the character is subject to involuntary transformation under the full moon and whenever damaged in combat."

My question is, when does a Lycanthrope return to its non-were form? In my campaign, a player is a Wererat. Lets say he gets damaged in combat, fails his Control Shape check and transforms into a Dire Rat. When does he go back to normal form? Is it like a Barbarians rage ability where they come out of it directly after combat/scenario that caused them to rage?

From the SRD, under LYCANTHROPE/LYCANTHROPY AS AN AFFLICTION/Changing Form:
SRD said:
An afflicted character who is not aware of his condition remains in animal form until the next dawn. An afflicted character who is aware of his or her condition (see above) can try to resume humanoid form following a change (voluntary or involuntary) with a Control Shape check, but if he fails his check, he remains in animal (or hybrid) form until the following dawn.
