Lynx companion or pet

Could anyone help me in making a lynx creature for a wood elf ranger.He will not have the animal companion feature but I would like him to have a pet(or two or three) . But I'm not sure about how to keep him from having an overpowered pet.I don't want a lvl.2 Character with
a Dire lion running around.Also how could I make Big cat mounts?

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, if this isn't an animal companion (I guess you just don't want the special benefits?), but I'll try to help.

According to WotC, the official version of the lynx is in Races of Faerun. If you don't have that, though, you could reasonably just take the cat from the MM and advance it to Small size. That shouldn't be overpowered. Once the character gets to higher levels, you could try the elven cat, sand cat (though that's not so foresty), cath shee, change cat, or elfin cat, assuming you want cats.

Mounts shouldn't be too hard. Just work out how you need to train any of the cats that are large enough for you. Hope that helps!

Thanks that helps. I am really looking for a kind of animal spy. Like for a Ringmaster(CS). He is taking the Clay's Alternate "Aragorn" Ranger class and thats why it won't be an animal companion. He might could help with combat too, but he really just wants a cool pet to do recon and other misc. stuff.
