M&M for Amber

First Post
Has anyone else thought of using Mutants & Masterminds to play a game set in Zelazny’s Amber universe? I remember the old Amber diceless role-playing game, and some of the problems with its rule base.

I am starting to kick around ideas in my head for the different powers (shape shifting, logrus, pattern, and trump) but I have not started any solid work on these ideas. Though I must admit some of the work is based of the old system. I really started thinking about this after reading the new Amber novel by John Gregory Betancourt, even though I will leave some of the things that he created out specifically the limitations on most of Dworkin’s family.

If I have time next week I will try to start working on the power building side of things if there is any interest.

Ooooooooo..... I like!!

I'm a huge fan of the books, but I'd never thought about roleplaying in the Amber universe (I didn't know there was an RPG).

I think M&M would be a great base for an Amber RPG.

There was a two book game that came out in the mid 90's that was a dice less point buy system. It ad lots of references to the stories for the powers, but there was some extrapolation on possible advanced techniques for them. It was nice in the fact that each of the books gave two or three versions of each of the main characters and some of the minor ones that we don't see in the stories such as the two brothers of Benedict.

It was put out by Phage Press I believe.

Sounds cool! I'll have to look for it on eBay.

I recently purchased Shadowknight, the second book (and covering the chronicles of Merlin) new from Phage Press.

My FLGS informed me that they still have the Amber: DRPG and SK:DRPG on hand, waiting to wing them out to fans.

Actually, Phage Press is still running and producing both Amber DRPG and Shadow Knight (which focuses on Merlin's saga).

Amber DRPG is one my my three favorite RPGs, in some 20 years of gaming and more than a hundred tried out.

Both Amber and Shadow Knight are great books, and the game is a whole lot of fun to play. The feel of Zelazny's books is captured very, very well and with a thoroughness that comes from a true love of the subject matter. Highly recommended. :D

I would throw one caveat into this discussion of ADRPG. This is roleplaying without a net: not only because of the diceless engine but the nature of the Amber setting. If you don't have a confident and experienced GM who is comfortable with improvisation, things can go very wrong very quickly.
