Mage Armor Questions

sabres

First Post
I am playing a druid with an animal companion and would like to improve its AC. Since the party doesn't have a sorc or wiz, there is no one to do mage armor spells. I saw in Sword&Fist there is a ring of mage armor, can this be adapted to a collar for an animal? If so, how much (the ring costs 12,000gp)? If the ring can be made to fit an animal, would it stack with barkskin? Or for that matter, could a collar of barkskin be made for the animal?

Thanks for any help.

If you made it a collar that could only be used by animals, you could per item creation rules, get a huge discount, something like 20%-50% off.

And yes, it stacks with natural armor (just remember that natural armor doesn't stacks, so barkskin on an animal is usually wasted)

IIRC, the collar of resistance in Masters of the Wild is cheaper than the regular cloak, and could act as a guideline for an appropriate "animals only" discount.

I do find it odd that barkskin, a druid's primary defensive spell, becomes almost worthless for a druid and his/her animal companions after mid-levels.

Yup.

Collar of Resistance +1 = 490 gp
Cloak of Resistance +1 = 1,000 gp

Collar of Resistance +5 = 12,250 gp
Cloak of Resistance +5 = 25,000 gp

In this particular case, its a 51% discount.

Keep in mind that strictly speaking, the answer is "only if your DM allows it". There's nothing in the core rules that automatically gives you (the player) the right to make a "new item" like this. The new-item construction table in the DMG is for DMs only.
