Mage Knight and HeroClix

First Post
I was recently attracted to it by the prospect of free, unpainted miniatures. However, before buying any, I want to know about MK; is it a good game?

Likewise, I, being a comics fan and a fan of Monte Cook, wonder of HeroClix is another enjoyable game. With HeroClix, though, I don't get any free D&D miniatures.

Are the two games any good? Are they worth the money?

Well, they aren't free and they aren't unpainted; but I think some of the newer series of Mage Knight figs are really great looking.

I play HeroClix a lot and enjoy it immensely; I am also a big supehero freak :)

The Minis aren't BAD, per se, but they also aren't necessarily standard fantasy, either.

Its more steampunkish/anime in feel to me.

The quality of the figures (even the most recent ones) is pretty poor, when compared to mental figures or even GW's plastic. They also tend to look like they have been painted by someone with a Dexterity penalty, although at a distance they are passable. If you have ever painted figures yourself, then you will be disappointed in them. I would never consider using one as a PC character but for NPC's I suppose they are fine, if you want to avoid having to do a lot of figure painting.

I'm not sure about the randomness. For example I bought a starter and two boosters and in that lot got 4 duplicates (not just the figures but the dials on the bases). The two boosters were 50% identical. This is great if you want monsters to attack in pairs I suppose.

.... and theres also Mechwarrior DarkAge in Clix and the upcoming Shadowrun and rumours of a Car Wars varient too.... though none of these offer minis for you DnD game... especially Sahdowrun as these will be produced in Action figure size!
