Although the concept of sets is moderately interesting, I was much more intrigued by how cheap (relatively speaking) these example items were. I'm glad to see that MIC won't be focused too narrowly on higher-level play. I may consider purchasing it.

Except that with non-house ruled core D&D rules it's pretty easy just to make or commission the next in the set. It's much better if they are considered very low level artifacts (i.e. the ways of making them have been lost).

Wow, I didn't even realize that was going to be possible. That just seems wrong. Gonna have to houserule that. Just add it to my current list of houserules. :)

Making sets should not be allowed. Just be glad that example set wasn't like Tal Rasha's or something. ;)

What I think they need to do next is tattoos like in Planescape Torment. Always thought that was cool.

Sets are a nice idea - it's about time they're formally introduced it into D&D (the idea has been around for ages, but now you no longer have to cut pieces off people to get your sets!)

You can always houserule that a set has to be crafted in one go and be linked during creation. You don't need just any hammer of thunderbolts, you need the very hammer that was made with these very gloves of ogre power!

It includes a Kama in that set, but Kama are supposed to be used in pairs.

Not in D&D they aren't. :p

Sets:
These have been around for a long time in D&D, but unlike Diablo, these "sets" were always of artifacts and near-artifacts, not items that you just find lying around any random dungeon.

Crown, Orb, and Scepter of Power, each set dedicated to Good, Evil, or Neutrality, meant to be the tools of the Champion of that alignment.
Teeth of Dahlver-Nar.
Eye and Hand of Vecna.
Cup and Talisman of Al'Akbar.
Even the Girdle, Gauntlets, Hammer combination is meant to echo a much more powerful set of artifacts: the Girdle, Gauntlets, and Hammer that Thor wields.

So, the "sets" in Magic Item Compendium had better be of much weaker power than the above, or they're not going to be showing up in my games at all.

Why bother with all those knowledge checks? If you get the kama first, the other two items only cost you a few thousand gp.

Heck, the best thing about the kama is that the "uses monk's unarmed strike damage" ability works out to +4,000 gp.

If I were playing a monk, I'd pay that in a heartbeat.
