Magic Items for the Everyday

Umbra

First Post
Years ago I read an article in Dragon about magic items designed to ease everyday living like the comb of untangling hair, etc.

Over the years I've given my players several magic items designed for everyday use (rather than being designed for adventuring, killing, etc). Some of them became favorites and one in particular became key to the party's adventuring style which the party named so creatively as...

The Heating Disk becomes hotter with one command word and cooler with another (no camp fire needed for cooking or staying warm and therefore no light. great for staying undetected at night/in darkness. a boon in cold environments).

Two others were the Hat of New Hairstyles and the Fan of Deodourising. The hat worked once per day and was appropriated by vain halfling who, I am surprised to say, never used it for a disguise, and the fan was great when the party had to deal with a noble after a few days travel or if someone had been sprayed with some foul substance by a monster.

What are some 'everyday' magic items you've come across in your gaming career that you loved (or hated as a DM)?

I designed a hoop of cleaning. It was a small 3 inch across ring that wold expand to 3 feet and passing something through it cleanedit. So you could expand it and pass it over yourself to clean you and your cloths. Or hold it out passing pots and pans through and cleaning them.

How does it know what's the dirt, and what's supposed to be there?

- Kemrain the Leery.

It's magic. Propably based on the 1e Clean cantrip (Also appeared in the 2e wizards spell compendium), and now according to Tome and Blood, a subfunction on Prestidigitation.

Never used it yet, but I'll have to do a portable self-cleaning toilet someday. Which could be pulled off easily enough with a folding chair, a hole and a bag of devouring :D

I don't think you should down-play the importance of the Cont. Light or Everburning Torch idea. A light source that nevers burns out, will not catch anything on fire and works in any weather would revolutionize the world. It would be the most sought after item in any domestic home. The Amazing Engine setting Magi-tech had a lighting service that was similar. You bought a contract and they came by and renewed your magical light souce on a regular basis. One reason to learn some low-level spells... :)

Continual Light Rock. We used these all the time. They are the size of a large marble and basically never went out. Keep it in a leather bag to keep from giving away your position when you wanted to be stealthy. Some players attached them to sticks, rods, pieces of armor, etc....One of the large cities had street lamps made from "light rocks" on a stand. No one would use a torch for light when you had one of these. No need to light it, never burns out/ blows out (unless dispelled), and good in any weather. Damn....wish I had one! :D

I hope the hole is adjustable. If a smaller character dropped a little too much of themselves through the hole
