Magic jar and Chain spell

Can these two be combined, can you really possess multiple targets? Dm say's that the real target of the spell is the gem.
I admit it's not in the spirit of the spell (Ha!) but isn't it legal?

What would end up happening is yes, you'd possess multiple targets... but one after the other, not at the same time. So Target A's soul would be briefly shunted into the jar, and then back to his body when your soul moved on to Target B. And so on, until you ended up possessing the last target... unless it makes its save, in which case you end up back in the jar.
