Magic Jar and Protection from Evil

Lucius Foxhound

First Post
The PHB says that Magic Jar is "blocked by protection from evil or a similar ward."

Would Prot from Evil block only an evil sor/wiz from attempting to take over your body? As far as I can see, Magic Jar isn't an evil spell, just necromantic.

Protection from Evil and its companion spells, Protection from Good, Law and Chaos prevent mental control regardless of the source.

Yep, the evil part is only important for one of the three effects the spell has, namely the +2 to AC and saves.

Protection from Evil/Good/Law/Chaos is easily the most powerful 1st level spell, easily foiling even 9th level spells from affecting you!

To answer your question yes it protects you from magic jar. But I have to ask, Don't you think someone trying to put your life force into a recepticle a little on the oh, I don't know... EVIL side of things?:D

Thanks for the advice.

It was just odd to think that a Chaotic Evil lich could be protected from Magic Jar from a Lawful Good Wizard by casting Protection from Evil!

Magic Jar isn't really evil... well, I guess if you take over someone's body and then have them run off a cliff... :)

FYI, while protection from Evil works well for preventing Magic Jar, I believe that Mind Blank would also work. Of course, it's much less common than protection from evil, but wizards do have another defense against Magic Jar effects. . . .

Isn't Mind Blank restricted to mind-affecting spells and divinations?

Magic Jar is not listed as mind-affecting... altho it probably qualifies... :)
