The basic values and virtues the monks considered paramount - honesty, compassion, thrift, humility, and the like - are all things that Tul sees as well and good. But their attitudes - attitudes they tried for years to impose upon a young wood elf - bothered him. Everything was ordered, and rigid, and disciplined. Laughter and frivolity were discouraged. And one fundamental internal contradiction, Tul could never fathom - how could love in the abstract and general be the ultimate expression of goodness, but love in the specific and concrete be considered inappropriate?</p><p></p><p>Nevertheless, for the sake of his teachers - his family - Tul tried to fit into the role allotted to him. 'Right' came easily to him - the monks had succeeded in raising a pure soul. But the individual in him chafed against the arbitrary rules - 'proper' was not nearly so natural a state for the young elf.</p><p></p><p>And then, on a meditative retreat to the forest, Tul met Sylindria, and everything changed. "Do what you *feel* is right," the dryad told him, and it made so much more sense than the codes and laws and rules the monks put so much faith in.</p><p></p><p>Naturally, they told him she was wrong, and that what he shared with her was wrong, and that he must give her up. But Sylindria had touched his heart, and he refused to cast her from his life. And so, his vow of obedience in tatters, and his family lost to him, he returned to the forest to live with his love.</p><p></p><p>In time, Sylindria introduced him to others, her friends in the forest, and showed him some of the small gods who hold sway and protect the inhabitants.
