Magic: Type 2 Decks to Beat

Jok3R

First Post
Thanks for the consideration and space, everyone (especially Morrus). :)

Ok, I'll get everything started with some sample lists of the decks that you will see in competitive play in the Standard (Type 2) format. Any deck that you would like to play or build should be able to compete with at least half of these decks.

(All lists I post will be formatted for MWS. If you do not know what that is, are unfamiliar with it, or have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.)

The first card of each deck is linked to the gatherer window for that card. From there, looking up unknown cards is easy: simply copy and paste other names into the bar below the card.

Faeries
This is the deck to beat. It's consistent, quick, and controlling. Faeries is probably one of the best decks Type 2 has seen in quite a while.

// Lands
4 [LRW] Secluded Glen
4 [MOR] Mutavault
2 [FUT] River of Tears
4 [5E] Underground River
5 [P2] Island (1)

SB: 1 [FUT] Slaughter Pact
SB: 4 [LRW] Thoughtseize
SB: 4 [9E] Bottle Gnomes
SB: 3 [PLC] Damnation
GB Elves
Another strong, well-rounded deck. GB Elves packs all the good spells while it lets its creatures back each other up.

// Lands
4 [LRW] Gilt-Leaf Palace
4 [AP] Llanowar Wastes
4 [MOR] Mutavault
4 [FNM] Treetop Village
3 [PT] Forest (4)
2 [TSB] Pendelhaven
1 [PLC] Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
2 [TSP] Swamp (4)

// Creatures
4 [6E] Llanowar Elves

4 Terror

// Sideboard
SB: 4 [MOR] Bitterblossom
SB: 3 [LRW] Primal Command
SB: 2 [FUT] Slaughter Pact
SB: 2 [SHA] Incremental Blight
SB: 4 [SHA] Kitchen Finks
GWB Doran
A deck that has been around since the namesake was introduced, Doran is still a force to be reckoned with. The deck is full of explosive spells that most other decks cannot run together. Unlike the previously-listed decks, Doran doesn't care about themes or creature types and, instead, focuses on raw power.

// Lands
1 [TSB] Pendelhaven
2 [SHA] Wooded Bastion
1 [PLC] Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
1 [FUT] Horizon Canopy
4 [SUM] Treetop Village
2 [SHA] Reflecting Pool
4 [MOR] Murmuring Bosk
3 [10E] Llanowar Wastes
1 [10E] Brushland
4 [LRW] Gilt-Leaf Palace

// Creatures
4 Birds of Paradise
3 [MOR] Chameleon Colossus
4 [LRW] Doran, the Siege Tower
4 [SHA] Kitchen Finks
4 [FUT] Tarmogoyf

// Spells
3 [FUT] Slaughter Pact
4 [LRW] Nameless Inversion
4 [LRW] Thoughtseize
3 [LRW] Profane Command
4 [MOR] Bitterblossom

// Sideboard
SB: 2 [LRW] Cloudthresher
SB: 3 [LRW] Wispmare
SB: 3 [MOR] Mind Shatter
SB: 1 [LRW] Shriekmaw
SB: 1 [SHA] Murderous Redcap
SB: 2 [LRW] Primal Command
SB: 3 [LRW] Oblivion Ring
I will finish this later, my computer's dying on me. :erm:

I have built various "faerie decks" over the years.

The most recent I call "The Howling Faeries" and is blue/green with Tropical Islands, Howling Mines, Sea Sprites, Black Vises and Storm Seekers among other things.

I don't even know what Llorwyn is! ;)
:D Understandable. I created this thread to bring everyone interested in more active competitive formats up to speed.

Standard, to refresh memories, is the most recent two blocks (Time Spiral and Lorwyn blocks, which consists of Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight, Lorwyn, Morningtide, Shadowmoor, and soon-to-be Eventide.) and the most recent core set (10th Edition).

This standard is a bit of an oddity for two reasons: first, it consists of part of another block that WotC threw together and slid in (Coldsnap), and second, one of the block's "theme" is that it contains four sets instead of three.

I've also updated the first post by linking to the gatherer page for the first card in each list (from there, you can copy other cards into the window).
