Magic weapons (lesser vorpal)

Hi all, I’ve been thinking about vorpal blades recently and I don’t like them. I generally don’t like instant kill things and I am not sure how you cut off a dragons head with a dagger.

So has anyone else made a house rule about this? On the rules board someone said they added a X4 to the crit multiplier. That sounds neat to me. So then I started thinking about lesser enchantments.

The obvious one would be to add 1 to the crit multiplier OR the crit range and call it a +??? Enchantment.

What do you think? Is +1 too small for this? Anyone know where I can get the math to see if [for example, a long sword] 1D8+1 (19/20 x2) is better or worse than 1D8 (18-20 x2) or 1D8 (19/20 x3) ???

Thanks for the math help, this stuff gives me a headache!

IMC, Vorpal adds +2 to the crit multiplier, and if you reduce someone to 0 HP (or lower), you sever their head (or cut them in half, or somehow otherwise savage the body, such that it can't be easily raised from the dead).

This is modeled on the 3.5e Disintegrate mechanic: do damage, and if it's enough to kill your foe, you really kill them.

Cost is as a +4 bonus.

The BOEM III has a +1/2 weapon enhancement. basically you need 2, 1/2 bonus to equal a plus 1. they are pretty cool. I wish there were more.
