Making character, Need in-depth opinion

Nvvyn

First Post
I have been recently invited to play AD&D 3e with some friends. The game is a high level campaign starting at 10th level. I have decided I want to make a 10th level wizard, but as far as race, feats, multiclassing, prestige classing, spells, I have no clue what to pick. But I do have a good bit of time to research how my character will be. I need some suggests on all of the above on how I should make my character, I want the best possible combinations for a caster. thanks!

That depends on a lot of things:

  • Are you using the point-buying system to generate stats, or are you just rolling them up?
  • Does your DM allow for strange races....i.e. monster PC's??
  • Which sourcebooks are you allowed to use (d20/Dragon magazine included)...and frankly which ones do you own??
  • What type of character do you want?
  • Do you want to use prestige classes?

Personally, I always go for the weird option. If you have access, check out Tome & Blood.

I would also multiclass.....start out with your 1st level or two as a rogue so you can get a bunch of skills, then switch to wizard.

Feats: I would definitely take Improved Initiative (always good to get the spell off before the bad guys), Combat Casting, and a metamagic feat or two.

Let us know what your options are, and we'll provide more ideas.

If you are going to be a combat mage instead of one who will be making magic items, you might want to look at the Incantatrix PrC in 'Magic of Faerun'.

Most of the better abilities show up later in the list, but they are good when you get them.

well, I own phb, dmguide, monsterM, and all the 3e character guides, (sword/fist), tome of blood etc.. as far as I know, I can only use these books. so basically, phb, dmg, tome/blood.

I can be any traditional race and maybe some monster races, but the party is basically good-based and I want to be well accepted anywhere I go, so I kinda wanted to stick with human, elf, half-elf etc.... I would love to prestige class if it is beneficial to my characte, not to interested in multi-classing.
I want my character to have a good balance of offense and defense. I'm not sure if I want to be a specialist mage or not, kinda depends on how valuable it would be. advicxe on this would be nice as well.

Go with a Gnome.

You gain a +2 Con bonus, which is good for some extra HP. You get a few free spell like abilities. Ghost sound in particular is nice for distracting guards and the like.

Now, make him a Necromancer and worship a death god. Give him a Lawful Neutral Alignment. And make him mean.

As for transportation, have you gnome raise some skeletons and have the skeletons carry you around on a Sedan chair.

After all, even though the archtypical Necromancer has been done to death, putting that much unbridled power into a borderline evil Gnome is enough to make such a thing intresting.

My favorite class is the sorcerer. I would encourage you to play a sorcerer, but even if you don't much of my opinion should still apply.

But the sorcerer only stuff first.

By starting at an advanced level you can "cheat" by equiping your character with magic items that replace spell slots. For example, you do not have to know mage armor if you have bracers of armor. You also free up a third level slot if you have an item that provides a haste effect, and if you also have something that will allow you to fly as the spell then those third level spell choices become easier. Also, prestige classes offer a greater benefit to sorcerers than they do to wizards.

Either way, if you have the empty slot, get a ring of jumping or a ring of swimming, they are cheap and useful.

If you are going to be a spell caster, I suggest that your feats are as important as your spells. Metamagic is my favorite, especially empower. However heighten can be very good, given the standard saves and ability score progression at 20th level a charm person heightened into a ninth level slot is a very real threat against a 20th level fighter.

For spells at least choose the 2nd level spell that increases your spell casting attribute, higher DCs are always good.
Also the second level spell that increases your CON is goo dbecause it's like temporary hit points. Double empower it for some real fun.

Well it's too bad you don't have Book of Eldritch Might and/or can use that. But since you have access to some of the accessories...

First choose Grey elf, you'll get penalties to strength and con BUT you're Dex AND intelligence will be +2

Now I'd recommend specalizing, being a Diviner. Prohibited School(s): Evocation, Illusion or Necromancy. This way you can be a fount of knowledge.

If you're DM allows you access to the FRCS, there's a feat in there you DEFINATELY should take, Spellcasting Prodigy.

Take that feat, Maximize Spell and Empower Spell and Extend Spells should be your Metamagic feats.

Then take for your regular feats, Spell Focus and Great Spell Focus in Divination. Don't worry about Great Spell Pentration unless you feel you want to be harder to resist. Pesistant Spell should be the other one you take, so your divinations last longer.

Hope that's been helpful. Oh and as for Pr-classes, just go Loremaster. That way you can be a fount of knowledge AND still be a great source of arcane might too.
