Making ranks more important

I was reminded of the increasing synergy bonuses granted for ranks of the Tumble skill in OA - at 15 ranks, you gain a +8 AC when you do total defense, instead of a +4 (or a +6 at 5 ranks), and I was wondering if anybody had taken that farther - having all synergy bonuses go up by +2 at 15 ranks, and again later on for Epic levels.

I think it would make ranks in skills a bit more important as compared to magic items.

There is rules in the ELH that has synergy bonuses every 20 ranks after 5

Nerfing the grossly overpowered +skill items is a solution. IIRC this is one of the changes WotC is making to 3.5E. I can't wait for July...
