Malhavoc 10 years of RPG PDF's

darjr

I crit!
Monte Cook posted this amazing article about the start of the PDF rpg industry and particularly Malhavoc Press.

I laughed at this quote, and I think others will.

My fears were put to rest the day The Book of Eldritch Might released: May 27th, 2001. Those 100 copies I wondered if I would sell over the life of the product? We sold more than that in the first hour. In fact, in the first day, we sold 1,000 copies. And, as a little bit of trivia, our very first customer was a guy by the name of Eric Noah, who founded what would eventually become ENWorld. That site would become crucial to our ability to get the word out about our new products.
I also thought it was interesting how low a bar even Mr. Cook set for his sales.

That was a very interesing article. Thanks for posting the link.

Edit: I found this news on Monte's Livejournal post from May 23, 2011.

What's more, Ptolus, Monte Cook's City by the Spire, is in the works now to once again be available in print later this year.

Heh. That quotation makes it sound as if Eric Noah's site was nothing in 2001. Come to think of it, didn't the Book of Eldritch Might win an ENnie? Does that mean Eric Noah had already retired his site?

Man, that was a long time ago.

Seems like yesterday.

Eric hadn't yet retired - I believe he closed "Eric Noah's unofficial 3E News" in August of that year, but the ENNies (that was the first one) was already being planned. It was held online, announced by none other than Gary Gygax himself. :)

I was actually at my FLGS when Ptolus arrived and bought it on the spot. Since then I've bought almost all of the supplemental tiles, adventures, Delvers Guild and mega-map ... and I love them all.

I started planning a new Pathfinder / Ptolus game when I heard about Malhavoc's current sale. I convinced my wife that for "medical" reasons I needed to buy the pdf, and she agreed. Because, lets face it ... lugging around that f'n book can give you a hernia!
