Myself and some friends had worked on a few different ideas that involved point systems. One was very complex, but customizable to the individual player. Others were simpler, but more set in stone as to how they worked. I can go into detail on either system if interested. Currently I allow casters to prepare as many spells as they have levels PLUS their Attribute modifier. They pick any spells they want between 1st level and the highest level they can cast. 0-level spells never have to be prepared seeing as they are so simple. Each spell only needs to be selected once. Then they use the spell slots as Mana to power these spells they've selected (I call them Weaves). Example: 5th level wizard with a 17 Int can prepare a total of 8 spells between 1st and 3rd level that he knows. If he picks Fireball, then he can cast that spell by using a 3rd level slot to power it. Casting the spell doesn't "wipe" it from memory. The Weave is still active. He can throw as many Fireballs as he wants as long as he has 3rd level slots (or higher) available to power the Weave with. Weaves that are prepared fade over 24 hours and so must be restudied to keep them going. Sorcerers and Bards simply meditate for 15 minutes a day to have ALL of their spells active as Weaves (thus their ability to spontaneously cast).
