i keep a close eye on everything i see, do, carry, use, etc...

but not so with the rest of my group.

sometimes it is a bit disheartening. i like grim and gritty.

i like getting ambushed when i go to answer nature's call.

i like starving, die of thirst, suffocating, freezing, or sweltering

I don't pay much attention to supplies unless the PCs are in a situation where this is particularly important, such as tainted food sources or lack of water. However, these situations come up very rarely, because with purify food first and create food later, D&D parties often just don't have to deal with scarcity.

I'm a fan of the "upkeep" rules (3eDMG pg 142, 3.5eDMG Pg 130). PCs can be assumed to have basic food and supplies commeasurate with the level of upkeep they pay. If they run out of cash, stuff starts running short. If they are not in a position to pay any upkeep (they're far from towns for resupply), I keep close track of what they have.

Typically, our group tends to forget about supplies, unless we're in a town getting ready to head out on something.

The problem is that at one point, the DM will remember about the rations and ask what we have. If we forgot to deal with it in the background when we were in town, we're screwed. I think we need to either be more careful about tracking it, or just forget about it altogether.

But it's not too big an issue either way.

I picked "somewhat". One PC keeps a list of everything in the bag of holding, including money in the group fund, and gems. We each keep our own individual lists of money, gems and items. However, we mostly discuss these things out of game, unless we need to use something. And we don't keep track of food. Usually the PCs stop at inns to eat.

I carried a chicken with me for a while. I forgot about it. Then I discovered it again buried deep in my folder of gaming stuff. I asked the DM to make a call on if I still had the chicken. He ruled that I'd forgotten to feed it and thus, it died a horrible death months ago.

Keeping track of your chickens. It's a good thing.

We tend to play pretty fast and loose with supplies and money. It's simply not worth the book-keeping, since it rarely makes the game more fun. I don't, however, want to completely handwave it away.

You know what else I wonder about? Arrows, Crossbow bolts etc?

I know I don't really keep track of them as best I could. Do you all keep track of them?
Now on that end, we're very tight. We have to track exactly how many arrows we have, and how many can be in the quiver at one time. If the quiver empties in the middle of a battle, then you have to take the time to get more from the backpack (or wherever they are stored).
