Battle Angel Alita is indeed a good manga that I would recommend. Too bad the Battle Angel Alita: Last Order manga is coming out so slowly... For fantasy manga, it is hard to top Berserk. It is horrifically graphic and almost disturbingly grim, so I recommend diluting your exposure to it with light-hearted fare, but it is an excellent series. The anime version is not bad, but it end when the story is just really getting started. Since this is a D&D fansite, I am obligated to recommend the Record of Lodoss War anime. If you like gunslinging action and good stories, I would recommend the Trigun/Trigun Maximum manga and its distant cousin, the anime series Gungrave. The former is a bit Wild West, a bit post-apocalyptic, and very sci-fi, while Gungrave is a cool mix of science fiction and a fantastic gangster story. I would avoid the Trigun anime, though, since it is a poor adaptation made when the manga was very far from being complete. Fullmetal Alchemist is always something I would recommend. In this case, both the anime and manga are completely different and equally good, so give both a try. As a mecha fan, I have a lot of favorites in that particular genre, but I find it hard to recommend a lot of them. For example, Eureka Seven is a fantastic series, but some of its greatness is predicated on the viewer having seen old classics like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam beforehand and going into the series with those kinds of expectations. Meanwhile, I would recommend three series (Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, and Zegapain) without hesitation if it weren't for the fact that I haven't even seen halfway through them yet... I guess, if you can stand old-style Japanese animation, watch the movie versions of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, as well as some of the other "One Year's War" stuff before going on to Zeta Gundam or Char's Counterattack, if you want a really good introduction to the "real robot" genre. Alternatively, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing always works. The old-school "super robot" genre is pretty much entirely reserved for people with a high tolerance for cheese and camp, but if you have such a tolerance I will recommend the relatively recent Gaogaigar, particularly if you have fond nostalgia for Transformers. Also, I suppose I am obligated to recommend the "new-school" super robot series Neon Genesis Evangelion because of its infamy and influence, but I find that RahXephon stole pretty much everything good about Evangelion and used it to make a better series. If none of those work for you, try Fullmetal Panic if you want something that can successfully mix a really cool action-filled mecha/counter-terrorism story with high-school romantic comedy that leans towards absurdity and slapstick. At this point, I know there are good series I should be recommending, but I can't figure out what they are... Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is one, I believe.
