The GHOST DANCE A letter, found among the files of President Zachary Taylor: Dear Mr. President Taylor, The northeast has grown dark, I'm afraid. Though not just in aspect. A terrible menace has grown up on our lakes and coast. It even stretches west, into our beautiful former country. Wherever those goddamn Iriquois stick their red fingers, it goes. We should have never let it get this far, sir. We should have killed all the sons of bitches when we had the chance. No reservations, no treaties, just more of what you and I were doing down near the Rio Grande -- killing. We took quite the loss when Pancho Villa got his act together, and that Sanchez didn't aid matters. Now with our great Union in such a weakened state, I fear we cannot combat the forces against us. They call it the Ghost Dance. Those reds have long since been a rarity we could get drunk on whiskey and laugh at until they passed out. It's as if we've done them a great injustice -- and to be honest, sir, I'm beliving more and more that we have. But these reds, they dance in complete silence. Gone are their whoops and hollers, it's as if they're dancing in death. They paint up their faces like death, too. The word is that some of our bucks out on the lakes had their shots pass right through them. Even more dangerous is the sheer unity of this dance. They're no longer warring among themselves, entirely. It's as if each and every red has their eyes, dark now, turned upon us. I tremble with fear of what may be coming, Mr. President. Please, I beg you, as a veteran of our great Army -- send help. Honor and loyalty, Gen. Cassius T. Long, 2nd Cavalry This is actually based on a real occurance in history. The midwestern tribes (obviously I've taken some liberty with just who is ghost dancin') began the ghost dance, which was basically their final battle cry. They would paint themselves like death, and believed that their buckskin shields were spirit-enchanted to stop bullets. Some letters claim that bullets did pass through the braves. Obviously, I made them quite a bit more on the supreme badass side. :D
