OK, here's my character, now complete with a background :) I'm leaving it open to the DM to decided if Captain de Vegaso lived or died, as he makes potentially a useful NPC. Hope all of this looks OK, and fits with the setting. Elias Correa - Male Human Barbarian 4; CR 4; Medium-size humanoid; HD 4d12+8; HP 40; Init +2 (+2 Dex); Spd 40ft; AC 18 (touch 12, flat-footed 16); Atk +8 Melee (1d6+4 dmg, 20/x2, Darkwood quarterstaff) or +6/+6 Melee (1d6+4/1d6+1 dmg, 20/x2, Darkwood quarterstaff, two-weapon fighting) or +5/+5 Melee (1d8+3/1d4+1 dmg, 20/x2, Longsword and dagger, two-weapon fighting) or +6 Ranged (1d10 dmg, 20/x3, Pistol); SA Rage 2/day; SQ Fast Movement, Illiteracy, Uncanny dodge, Trap sense +1; AL CG; SV Fort +6, Ref +3, Will +1; Str 16 Dex 14 Con 15 Int 10 Wis 11 Cha 10. Skills: Climb +10 (7 ranks), Intimidate +7 (7 ranks), Jump +10 (7 ranks), Swim +10 (7 ranks), Survival +7 (7 ranks). Feats: Improved Unarmed Strike, Two-Weapon Fighting, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Firearms). Languages: Common(?), Spanish. Spells Per Day: N/A Possessions: Darkwood quarterstaff, Longsword, Pistol, 20 Pistol bullets, 2 Daggers, +1 Breastplate, Boots of the Winterlands, Backpack (Containing: Bedroll, Grappling Hook, 4 Potions of Cure Light Wounds, 2 Potions of Expedious Retreat, 2 Potions of Jump, 2 Potions of Spider Climb, Silk rope (50'), 4 packets of Scentbreaker, 3 Sunrods, 10 Tindertwigs, 7 Day's trail rations), Hip-flask of whisky, Waterskin (full). 61 gp, 4 sp. XP: 6,000. Elias Correa was born in a small village in northern Spain. Born, unfortunately for him, into a long line of soldiers. Elias had no great goal of honour or glory, and would have been happy to spend his life in the safety of being a farmer or blacksmith. His father, however, would have none of 'such nonsense'. As soon as he was old enough to hold a sword and shoot a pistol, his father schooled him in the ways of war. Despite his dislike of such martial pursuits, Elias showed a natural aptitude for fencing, and quickly developed a grasp of the fundamentals of military strategy. At the age of 17, Elias joined the army with an officer's commission. Along with many of his comrades, he was sent to tame the New World, and did his duty. Until he met an Aztec girl, Xochitl. Her beauty and intelligence changed his view of the native people. Far from seeing them as the bloodthirsty savages his commanders would have him belive, Xochitl brought him to belive that the Aztec were the equal of the Spanish. Such ideas troubled Elias, and although he still obeyed the orders given to him, he had little faith left in his superiors. This state of doubting obedience might have lasted indefinitely, had Captain Álvaro de Vegaso (Elias' commander) not made a grave mistake. Elias passed Captain de Vegaso's office one afternoon only to hear the sounds of a struggle from inside. Bursting in, he found himself confronted with a scene far from the assault on his Captain that he had imagined: Álvaro, knife in hand, was cutting the dress from Xochitl's sister. "Go away for an hour, Elias, I'm busy." Captain de Vegaso said, unashamed of his obvious intent to violate the girl. Elias didn't go away. Perhaps five minutes later, the red fog of rage cleared from Elias' mind, and he found himself standing over the bloodied and beaten body of Captain de Vegaso. Believing the man to be dead, Elias panicked and fled north, after returning Xochitl's sister to her family. Elias is now a wanted man, and has come to try his luck north of the border with the Americans. So far, he's finding them just as depressing as his own countrymen, interested only in making money and killing the natives. He's turned to drink for comfort, which while dulling some of the guilt he feels at abandoning Xochitl, does little to help his temper...
