Manners Question

I have a small puzzle that I hope someone could help me with. Several months ago I did some pro-bono work for a publisher in order to gain some exposure. After I sent in the work I discovered that the game I was working on had been sent back for more development. I was assured that they would let me know if they returned to working on the project. Recently, I have heard rumors that they are looking for new writers. I planned on e-mailing the publisher and seeing whats going on, but I don't know how to phrase the inquiry. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not a publisher, but I would just stat that you did past work on the project and were wondering what state the project was in right now? I wouldn't quote rumors to them, I'd just ask them how the project is coming along.

Not a publisher, either, but it's generally best to start by assuming that everything is on the up and up. The rumour could easily be wrong and, even if it isn't, that doesn't mean your work is going to waste. Be polite, as Crothian says. Politeness never hurts. Never start out nasty -- you usually can't back off from there.
