Mapping Help

I'm looking for some software that will help me create maps. Not indoor or dungeon maps but outdoor maps. I can't count the number of times that I have drawn a map of the local area and after a few play sessions need to redraw it or need to modify it. It would be great to just reprint it.

I have seen a number of dungeon generating software programs but not much or wilderness maps. Of course as with all gamers my pocket book is not endless so something that is free would be best but I'm willing to pay a little. It doesnt need to be anything fancy either just the basics are nessary. Draw some lines for roads and some symbols for terrian and the ability to type in text. Maybe I should just become more procifient with MS Paint.
