Heh... they Poly wrapped it too.

Just got mine in the mail today.

They wrapped it in plastic so people couldn't see the special coupon code :P

Is it a good idea to give people unaware of PDF products the impression that they can get 14 good products for under a dollar a piece? I realize most of those products have been out forever and are not really going to sell to many more copies but after such a haul of products will these new customers come back? I know I'm going to pick it up because there are a couple books in there I've been on the borderline of getting out of curiosity. (I'll never run a 14th level module but I've been curious about reading DGF, for example.)

I may not be sure this is the best way to get people to look at PDFs but at least you guys are trying something. Good Luck.

Well, we're hoping that the article will give people a chance to familiarize themselves with the e-industry, but I don't think it's enough. There seems to be an awful lot of people who have never given PDFs a look, or did so a long time ago and were disappointed. We chose the better representatives of PDF quality and hope that perhaps this might finally lure some holdouts to give electronic publishing another go. Honestly, I just hope the 50meg download size doesn't scare off too many people! James at RPGNow said he'd reduce the price to burn to CD to $5 as his contribution to the cause, but we're still trying to work out how to code it on the site. I suspect a lot of CDs will be burned of this package.

Heck, someone bought the promo pack at FULL PRICE without the coupon, so someone's got to think that it's worth it! (I hope that's the case... I'd hate to get an irate email refusing the charges next month!)

I can hardly wait to see the magazine- between the first article written by the hubby and I to appear in Polyhedron and the piece by the kids, I'm totally psyched. Did anyone like the Docentos? Did the elfporn joke make it in? My subscription and contributor copies can't get here fast enough!!!

I really don't see how this can hurt. I'm certainly going to pick it up for the books I couldn't quite justify before.

50 MBs, though...owww...

Cheers
Nell.

FWIW, I signed on to this, contributing a product and all, for a couple of reasons...

1.) I figured that (as you noted) the sales cycle for the EoTaOdA was more or less complete.

2.) I see this not as a bad sign that "you can get cool stuff dirt cheap" so much as I see it as a "loss leader" - not unlike the "Mastercraft Anthology" from FFG. Most people don't expect to get books of MA's size for $5; they recognize that this is, in effect, a one-shot special promotional deal. That people will jump on the "bargain price" gives you a chance to get your "name" out there and for them to take a look at what you've got... in classical marketing terms, it's the "razor," so to speak - you lose money on the razor, but you hope you can sell a lot of blades. In the same fashion, you won't make money on this particular product, but you hope by breeding familiarity, you will see increased sales numbers down the road.

Will everyone who buys the "loss leader" buy your other stuff? Of course not. But if you get even a few people who decide to buy your other stuff because they liked what they saw, it's a good investment at the end of the day... you've added a few more customers to your customer base.

I also contributed a product to this. It's my hope that at least some of the people who buy this special pack will become repeat customers at RPGNow. Every new RPGNow customer is a potential new customer for my own PDFs.

I've got some other ideas in the works that, while not as big as this Poly arrangement, should make some impact on my own PDF sales (and maybe those of others at RPGNow).
